Winona State University College of Education - Artifacts
Artifact 1 - 4th Grade Geography Lesson Plan
Standards Met: 1, 2, and 3
This artifact is a 4th grade geography lesson plan I created for EDUC 333 Teaching Social Studies. This lesson was created to help students meet social studies standard 4.3.2.4.2. This standard seeks to educate students about the countries neighboring the United States and their respective major cities. Students are asked to use various materials such as maps, globes, atlases, and books about the neighboring countries (Canada, Mexico, Cuba, Haiti, and the Dominican Republic).

This artifact meets standard one because it connects disciplinary knowledge to other subject areas and to everyday life by giving students access to tools they can use to learn about other countries in every day life. Being a good global citizen and having geographic literacy is important to understanding news events and how events that happen in neighboring countries are interconnected. The artifact also meets standard one because it uses multiple representations and explanations of subject matter concepts by using multiple materials for students to use and understand. The artifact meets standard two because it demonstrates my knowledge of how students learn and develop. Student must have ample opportunities to acquire skills and internalize knowledge. The artifact meets standard three because it uses the theory of multiple intelligences in the activity. Students have multiple ways to gather information based on their learning style(s).
Artifact 2 - K-2nd Grade Water Safety Lesson Plan
Standards Met: 4 and 5
This artifact is a K-2nd grade lesson plan for HERS 310 Foundations of Elementary Health Education about water safety. We were required to write a lesson plan using the Kids Health curriculum about safety. The lesson integrated the subjects of art, English/writing, and music in the lesson plan as well.

This artifact meets standard 4 because it followed the standards of instructional strategies as outlined by the Standards of Effective Practice. I used a variety of strategies within my lesson plan to encourage students to meet the performance skills outlined. The artifact also meets standard 5 because the lesson plan encourages students to talk to each other about the content and to have positive social interactions. Positive relationships are important to a healthy classroom environment.
Artifact 3 - Reading Application Assignment
Standard Met: 6
This artifact is one of the reading application projects I completed for EDFD 420 Classroom Management. This particular artifact is from Chapter 8 Managing Cooperative Learning Groups. In the template, I focus on highlighting the importance of interpersonal relationships, the benefits of cooperative learning, and my response to a scenario in the textbook in which I advise a teacher on using cooperative learning groups in his classroom.

This artifact meets standard 6 because it demonstrates how to use positive communication within the classroom environment by using the cooperative learning technique. The artifact also demonstrates that I am knowledgable about effective communication strategies and the conveying of ideas within the classroom environment. In the artifact, I write about the importance of fostering independence in the classroom. I also write about how cooperative learning increases engagement amongst classmates. To implement cooperative learning in the classroom it is important that the teacher discusses group work expectations and models how to effectively communicate in a group setting.
Artifact 4 - Kindergarten Science Lesson Plan Outline
Standard Met: 7
This artifact is an outline of a kindergarten lesson plan that was created in EDUC 335 Teaching Science and Environmental Studies. The lesson plan outline focuses on students participating in activities that includes engaging, exploring, and explaining animals and their habitats. The benchmark that this lesson plan aims to achieve is 0L.1.2.1.2 Make observations of plants and animals to compare the diversity of life in different habitats.

This artifact meets standard 7 because the lesson is planned to include instruction based on subject matter, students, the community, and curriculum goals. Students are able to participate in activities that cater to various learning styles. This lesson plan outline also operates at multiple levels to meet the individual needs of students. The lesson plan outline includes what to do if students need an extra challenge or extra help for example.
Artifact 5 - Qualitative Reading Inventory Analysis
Standard Met: 8
This artifact is a Qualitative Reading Inventory (QRI) analysis for EDUC 329 Teaching Reading and Language Arts II. This QRI was done for a 3rd grade student in my field experience placement opportunity. The QRI is a formal assessment used to assess fluency and comprehension skills. The QRI also provides teachers with a format to set instructional goals for the student. The entirety of the analysis also included scores from previous assessments such as the the Running Record and the Spelling Inventory assessments.

This artifact meets standard 8 because the artifact demonstrates my knowledge of formal and informal assessment strategies and how I used my findings to inform the instruction goals I set for the student. I used an appropriate assessment strategy to gather information about reading comprehension. I also responsibly shared the data with my professor, Dr. Joan Bendix, for her to assess my ability to assess my student.
Artifact 6 - Teacher's Creed
Standards Met: 9 and 10
This artifact is my Teacher's Creed from EDUC 410 Foundations of Early Childhood. This assignment is a compilation of how I will incorporate theory into my teaching philosophy and how I will use various teaching methods in my classroom.

This artifact meets standard 9 because it is a reflection of my professional disposition. It reflects how I want to effect my students, their guardians, and other professionals in my career. I used three theorists to inform my teaching philosophy. This artifact also meets standard 10 because it describes how I will communicate and interact with students and their families. It also demonstrates that I know student rights and the needs of the whole student.
